But now is the time for MNEK to take centre stage and his long awaited and hugely anticipated debut solo album which was released in September of this year; a remarkable and bold body of work, which has literally been 10 years in the making. With the album, he wants to embrace and fill the gap in the pop star market he didn’t have to look up to while growing up. While many black, gay artists (Shamir, Mykki Blanco, Frank Ocean) have taken care of the leftfield crosspoints on the graph of sexuality and race, his chosen avenue is to hit the commercial jugular.
Both singles ’Tongue’ and ‘Colour’, with their terrific accompanying videos, have already set the tone as MNEK cleverly plays on his extensive pop knowledge but reframes it into something brand new. Across the entire album, you can get a sense of the glorious sense of purpose that surrounds MNEK and his music right now. Stay tuned as the stars continue to align for one of the UK’s most important pop-stars.
